THE BLACK PHONE 2 gets the green light and a summer 2025 release date

The black phone The sequel is officially moving forward at Blumhouse, and Universal Pictures has set the release date for June 27, 2025! Universal and Blumhouse say in the announcement that The Black Phone 2 will be the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”

The film comes from the director Scott Derrickson and is an adaptation of the story by Joe Hill. The first film centers on a shy but intelligent 13-year-old boy named Finney who is kidnapped by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When an unplugged telephone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are determined to make sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

Just a few weeks ago Derrickson was asked if a sequel was in the works and he said, “It’s possible. It’s not a definite thing, but if it becomes one, you’ll be the first to know. I can tell you this, I wouldn’t make a sequel to Black Phone without Ethan. I don’t think it would make sense to do it.”

Well, now that it’s official, I guess that means Ethan Hawke he will also return to the franchise as The Grabber. Previously speaking about a sequel, Hill said: “There have been some really, really interesting conversations about a sequel. And the thing is, as soon as I saw the mask, which was designed by Tom Savini and Jason Baker, as soon as I saw the mask and thought, “If this movie is a hit, there will be a sequel,” because the mask is so iconic. It’s like Freddy Krueger’s glove, it’s like Michael Myers’ mask, it’s this thing where are the images, the iconic images, that haunt people’s sleep. And, look, to your horror, guys like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, and Frankenstein, and Dracula, none of these guys stay buried. They all make it out of the grave for a sequel and then a threequel.”

He continued: “There was talk about how to make a sequel that doesn’t suck. How to make a sequel that doesn’t detract from the previous film, that is still scary, that is intense, that feels organic. And those conversations were pretty good. But if I had to provide some details, Scott and [writer C. Robert] In the movie Cargill locked me in the basement and that was it. And the phone doesn’t work. As you know, the phone doesn’t work. I can’t call anyone to come out. So I would refuse to offer any real, granular details about the possible sequel.”

Derrickson also spoke about a sequel in a past interview, saying, “Joe Hill came to me with a wonderful idea for a sequel to Black Phone, and if this movie does well, I’ll do it. He’s got a great idea, I’m really into it.” Joe is very protective and personal about his material, but he came to me with the idea and I thought, ‘This is how you do a sequel to Black Phone. This is fantastic.'”

There’s no plot information available yet, but I’m excited to see what the story will be!
