Mr. Robot Creator Sam Email was developing a series adaptation of Fritz Langis a classic science fiction film from 1927 Metropolis For years. The project was started on Apple TV+, but ultimately was one of the first major projects to fall victim to the Hollywood strikes when they began, and scripts weren’t completed before the writers’ strike.
It was explained at the time: “Due to the timing, UCP faced increasing costs related to starting production, building and maintaining extensive sound stages, labor and VFX work – despite not knowing when filming would could begin due to the writers’ strike. After evaluating the money spent so far and the risk of moving forward, UCP has decided not to proceed with the series and has informed its partners on Apple TV+.
This was a project I was really excited about, so it’s a shame it won’t get made. Esmail recently shared his thoughts on the matter Metropolis being demolished:
“Obviously it was heartbreaking. But during the strike we all understood it. And I got to work with a lot of talented people in Australia where we were mounting the production. It was a really great experience and I don’t regret it for a second.
That’s a very diplomatic response and I’m sure he’s much more disappointed than he shows here. This was a project that Esmail was passionate about and on which he had been working for more than seven years.
Like the original film, this series adaptation is set “in a future society where wealthy industrialists rule the vast city from skyscrapers, while an underclass of workers living underground constantly toil to operate the machines that provide energy. Risking everything they know, two star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of the divide must find a way to bring down the entire system.
The story is set in “a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city lord, and Maria, a saintly figure for the workers, to overcome the enormous gap that separates the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the lord of the city.
Briana Middleton AND Lindy Booth they were supposed to star in the series.
