Carrie Fisher’s sister is speaking out about her mental health struggles in hopes of reaching others

Joely Fisher she is best known for her roles in films such as The maskAND Mixed nutsas well as long-running TV series Elena AND Till death. He’s been in countless other movies and shows, but these days his most notable role is as Treasurer of the SAG-AFTRA union, where he shares his story of helping the people he’s serving.

Joely Fisher is remembering her sister, Star Wars star Carrie Fisher, telling her story of a lifelong struggle with mental health, as well as the struggles of Joely’s daughter, in hopes of reaching her fellow actors who may be fighting the same battles in their lives. The SAG-AFTRA website revealed some resources on mental health, and in a new update from Fisher, he said:

“My brilliant sister Carrie Fisher, who would have celebrated her 67th birthday tomorrow, wore her mental illness like a crown and scepter. When she left, I took it upon myself to support humans who would otherwise feel alone. What I didn’t know then was that a similar challenge and diagnosis would soon affect one of my children. The struggle is real. Navigating this world is difficult enough without the burden of imbalance in the brain. As a mother, I am heartbroken that I cannot silence her pain. The irony is not lost on me that I could be a maverick in the mental health “space” and not be able to help my child. My point in sharing these intimate details is that a key to starting a journey to mental wellness is to be willing to talk about your experience, hopefully with trusted people in your life or with trained professionals.

If you or someone you know is looking for mental health help and resources, you can find some on the SAMHSA website.
