David Fincher says his WORLD WAR Z sequel was a lot like THE LAST OF US and he’s glad it didn’t happen

Several years ago, director David Fincher was attached to direct a sequel to World War Z hero Brad Pitt. I was actually very curious and excited to see what the director would do with the zombie franchise, and now we know.

During a recent interview with GQ, the director explained that World War Z the sequel would have been very similar to the HBO one The last of us series. He also explained why he’s happy the project never came to fruition, saying:

“It was a bit like The Last of Us. I’m glad we didn’t do what we were doing, because The Last of Us has a lot more room to explore the same things. In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite… they used him in the title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with Dick Cavett, a David Frost-style talk show.”

Even though he says he’s glad the movie project was scrapped, I still would have loved to see Fincher direct a zombie movie! I have no doubt that he would bring something unique and different to the genre. It would definitely elevate things.

The first World War Z the film was released in 2013 and was directed by Marc Forster. The film is an adaptation of the 2006 book of the same name by Max Brooks. The story revolves around Gerry Lane (Pitt), a former United Nations investigator called in to help stop a global pandemic that turns people into aggressive zombie-like creatures. As he travels the world, searching for the origins and a potential cure for the epidemic, he witnesses the collapse of societies and the desperate measures taken to combat the spreading chaos. The film combines intense action sequences with a critique of global response mechanisms and human resilience in the face of existential threats.
