Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for its upcoming film about surviving a plane crash Snow Society. The film tells the extraordinary true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes on October 13, 1972. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash.
This is one of my worst nightmares. Every time I get on a plane… ugh. This is such a scary situation! Now, I like survival stories about endurance and perseverance in dangerous environments. When it comes to accident planning, though, that’s what I hope to never experience.
The film is based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, and the synopsis reads: “In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to take a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they must resort to extreme measures to survive.”
The film was directed by JA Bayona (The impossible, when a monster calls), and previously spoke about why he wanted to take on this project, saying: “I think I’m drawn to these really extreme stories. They may feel dark, but ultimately, they are very optimistic about life. I think that to improve life sometimes you need to face death. One of the things I love about Vierci’s book is that he manages to put you inside the minds of the characters. It makes you live this experience; it puts you in front of death to highlight life. This is something you can find in common with The Impossible. It’s a very different story, though, and it’s a very different context. The Impossible happened in 72 hours. This happened in 72 days and the geography is totally different. One of the things that I think is really special about Society of the Snow is that it takes place in a place where life is not possible. You have to reinvent your life. You have to reinvent your beliefs. You have to reinvent your connection, your bond with other people.
The film’s cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Agostino Pardella, Matías Recalt, Esteban Bigliardi, Raffaele Federmann, Fernando Contigiani Garcia, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francesco Romero, Valentino Alonso, Thomas Lupo, Agostino Della Corte, Felipe Otano, Andy Pruss, Blas Polidori, Filippo RamusioAND Simone Hempe.
Netflix will release the film on January 4, 2024.
