Director Matthew Vaughn he’s done his fair share of comic books and superhero movies Kick ass, X-Men: First ClassAND Kingsman, and in a recent interview with Screen Rant, he shared his thoughts on superhero fatigue and what he hopes to see from Marvel Studios and DC Studios as they continue to build their brands with the movies and TV shows they make. He said:
“I think at least DC is down; I think James Gunn and [Peter Safran] have a good chance of bursting and hopefully [Kevin] Feige will go back to making less is more, making fewer movies and focusing on making them great.”
Yes! Like many fans, this is something I’ve been saying for years! They need to focus more on developing quality movies instead of producing tons of mediocre content, which is killing their fan base.
Vaughn also believes that superhero films made today rely too much on CGI, stating that it has “messed everything up because you feel like you’re watching a video game”. He added: “You’re not with the characters. Aside from the Guardians, I still think Groot and the Raccoon are fucking pieces of genius, and I have so much affection for them. So I’ll be intrigued.
I agree with the CGI madness, but that’s the way it is and I don’t think it will change anytime soon. Studios just need to start putting in more time and effort so that the CGI looks great instead of cheesy.
Vaughn also talked about DC The flash film, which performed poorly at the box office. He said: “What really scared me was that I really liked The Flash. I thought it was a really good movie, right? And it died at the box office, right? And I’m like, wait, wait, this is a good movie. What happened? And I don’t know if it was superhero fatigue; you just saw it done. So, even now that we got it right, there was some really, really complicated and difficult and pretty special and unique directing in that movie. Which I don’t think Muschietti got enough credit for what they did.”
The flash bombed due to a number of factors that not only included superhero fatigue, but also controversy over its star, and the fact that the entire DC Cinematic Universe was going to be rebooted, and the story wasn’t going anywhere with the franchise.
What do you think of what Vaughn has to say here about Marvel and DC movies?
