EXCLUSIVE: Buffalo 8 acquired worldwide rights to it Wild flower, the award-winning documentary by Matt Smukler that served as the basis for his Kiernan Shipka drama of the same name, which had its world premiere in Toronto last year and recently found an audience on Hulu. Details on the release schedule are still being finalized, although the film is expected to be released on TVOD and/or SVOD platforms next year.
Produced by Brian Weidling of Arm and Leg Productions, Wildflower: the documentary tells the true story of promising track and field star Christina Stahl, who had to raise herself and her parents from the age of nine. As Christina’s senior year of high school approaches, she is faced with dealing with her endearing but complicated family dynamics while making the difficult decision between staying at home and being a caregiver to her neurodivergent parents or going to college.
“At some point in your life you will either be the person receiving care or the person making it possible, but caregiving stories lack diversity,” Smukler and Weidling said in a joint statement. “It is estimated that there are 53 million people in the United States who provide unpaid care to an adult family member. It’s no surprise that Christina’s story resonated with so many people. We are grateful to partner with Buffalo 8, who share our passion for taking accurate storytelling around neurodiversity and healthcare to the next level.”
