Trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s FARAWAY DOWNS series starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman

Hulu has released the first trailer for Baz Luhrmannis a sweeping Australian epic Distant Downsa limited series starring Nicole Kidman AND Hugh Jackman. The show will expand on the story told in the 2008 film Australiaand was assembled entirely from footage that Luhrmann shot for Australiawith a new ending and an updated soundtrack.

The story centers on an English aristocrat, “Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman), who travels halfway around the world to confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian outback called Faraway Downs. Following the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown), plots to take over his land and reluctantly joins forces with a rough stockman (Jackman) to protect his ranch.

The “sweeping romantic adventure is explored through the eyes of young Nullah (Brandon Walters), a bi-racial Indigenous Australian child caught up in the government’s draconian racial policy now called the Stolen Generations.

Distant Downs was directed, produced and co-written by Luhrmann (Elvis, The Great Gatsby) and worked on the series with the writers Stuart Beattie, Ronald HarwoodAND Richard Flanagan.

Luhrmann had previously said in a statement: “I had initially decided to consider the concept of sweeping, Gone With the Windepic in epic style and turning it on its head: a way of using romance and epic drama to shed light on the roles of First Nations people and the painful scar in Australia’s “Stolen Generations” story. While in Australia the film has a life of its own, there has been another telling of this story; one with different layers, nuances, and even alternative twists that an episodic format allowed us to explore. Taken from the same material, Faraway Downs is a new variation on Australia for audiences to discover.”

The series will be released on Hulu on November 26.
