Director Matthew Vaughn will relish the opportunity to make a splash in two film franchises that are sacred to fans.
Vaughn said on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he and comic book writer Mark Millar had the grand concept of a “three-picture trilogy” about Superman for Warner Bros.
“We suggested how to make a trilogy Superman Films. Warners were not interested. That’s it,” Vaughn said. After that, it “never came back,” he added.
The proposed trilogy would be based on Richard Donner’s Superman films.
“I think Donner did a great job,” Vaughn said. “I find wonder woman worked really well because it was basically a Thunder Superman movie but reimagined as Wonder Woman. I would have made a modern version of the Donner [films].”
“Our big idea,” he continued, “was the twist that Krypton didn’t blow up.” Ultimately, yes. The father was right, he just had the wrong timing. When Superman grows up, all of a sudden there’s a mass exodus and then all hell breaks loose, and that was our idea.
The main villains would be “Zod and Brainiac”, with Lex Luthor as the main villain “until Krypton explodes.”
Vaughn also said he would like to seek reform war of stars. He was asked if it would be difficult for him to turn down directing a film in the series. “Not so much now,” he joked. What interests him is the possible reboot of the franchise’s more famous characters with completely new versions of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
“I would say that making a Star Wars film for me means playing with the characters that I’ve loved,” Vaughn said. “So when they said to me, ‘Do you want to reload?’ war of stars and basically there’s Luke Skywalker, Solo and Vader, and you’re doing your version of it,” everyone would say, “You’re an idiot for trying,” but that would excite me.
Vaughn understands that he is playing with fire by even suggesting that the cannon be tampered with. “Why not [reboot]? Bond, are you bothered by Bond? I mean, you asked me who was going to play the next Wolverine. Why are they like that? [Star Wars] Characters so sacred you can’t redo them for a new 1977 audience?
Vaughn suggested that moving away from these characters was one of the reasons for the franchise’s misstep. “Star Wars is the Skywalker family, and I think they made a mistake. They did a fantastic job on TV [shows on Disney+]But it needs an epic new film, and that’s what I would do.
He added: “Everybody’s going to go crazy, but let’s start because if you want a new generation, make the film for them.” Hopefully the old generation can do it so well that they will say, “Okay, do it. .” I’m having fun.”
Vaughn’s latest film, Argyllwill be in theaters on February 2, 2024.
