Rithy Panh Announces Resignation as Jury Chair of Cannes’ TikTok Contest

The 2022 Cannes Film Festival kicked off amid concerns over the independence of journalism. There are now concerns about the independence of the juries.

Two days ago, famed auteur filmmaker Riti Pan resigned as jury president of TikTok’s first short film competition, citing “ongoing disagreements about the independence and sovereignty of the jury.”

In an interview with the French edition L’ObsThe filmmaker explained his decision, citing: Pressure on jury selection from a Chinese European team.

“The challenge is that TikTok is a marketing driven company and doesn’t understand creators and their independence…“Even though we didn’t see each other, they asked for reports on our progress,” he said.

The filmmaker added that the platform makes many “recommendations” about who should win awards, often for the best productions and the least politicized work, often by famous creators.

“Speaking is not an insult to creativity, it was all interesting, just a choice between a great team of professionals with big funds, 20 assistants and a cameraman, and a little boy photographing his friends with lots of poetry and dedication. I think the message is that we should reward the second movie.”

“I had no choice but to quit my role. Competition with the jury must be at the rate of full independence in the selection. Sorry, that wasn’t the case. ”

TikTok became the official partner of Cannes this year. The short film competition was an important part of the collaboration.

It is unclear what will happen next with competition and cooperation. We turned to Pan y Festival for comment. THR was the first to announce Panh’s resignation.
