Original DAREDEVIL Showrunner Steven DeKnight Talks Marvel’s Big Changes in DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN

It’s a little crazy that Marvel Studios didn’t involve the creative team behind Netflix Reckless to develop the new series Daredevil: Born Again. Kevin Feige he said about other projects, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and there was nothing really broken in the original Daredevil series, but they went on a journey to do their own thing with Daredevil, and well… it ended up explode in his face.

Midway through production, Marvel Studios ended up firing the show’s lead writers and all of its directors. They are now looking to hire new talent to take the show in a new direction as “part of a significant creative reboot of the series.” Marvel executives and Feige reviewed footage of the series during the strike and after seeing what had been shot, they realized that “The show wasn’t working.”

Marvel is also completely changing how they develop these TV shows. They will finally use showrunners and executives who can focus on these projects. Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum explained: “We need executives who are dedicated to this medium, who focus on streaming, who focus on television, because they are two different forms.”

This new process will see showrunners write pilots and show bibles, while the days of filming an entire series – and then figuring out what worked and what didn’t work in post-production with expensive reshoots – are now over.

Now, original Reckless showrunner Steven DeKnight took to social media to address these changes at Marvel saying he’s happy to finally realize they were doing it all wrong.

“I am not happy that the show was canceled and have consistently said otherwise. However, I’m happy that they finally realized that you need a real showrunner who is a writer to make a series work.

DeKnight isn’t wrong in his assessment, and hopefully these changes make a difference and improve the narrative quality of their series projects moving forward.
