As you know, Disney canceled it Willow sequel series after just one season, only to remove that season from Disney+. Over the weekend, franchise star Warwick Davis took to social media to denounce Disney’s decision and said it was “embarrassing” for her.
Davis said: “I meet lovely people daily who are fans of #Willow, who are the reason the @DisneyPlus series was made. Please tell me @WaltDisneyCo, what do I say to these subscribers when they ask why they can? I won’t watch anymore the series? #embarrassing.”
The original Willow movie is one of my favorite fantasy films. I loved that movie as a kid and was really excited about this sequel series, but it ultimately turned out to be a huge disappointment for me and many other fans. I know there are people who liked it, but for me the writing and story were very weak and the modern sensibility they added to the show completely took me out of this world. There were simply a lot of bad creative decisions.
The budget for Willow was $105.9 million, meaning the studio spent more than $13 million per episode. That’s crazy to me, especially considering how mediocre the show turned out. It’s a shame because, in the end, the Willow sequel series turned out to be a tax break for Disney.
Jonathan Kasdan he was the mastermind behind the show and had previously explained that he was trying to make the show fresh and unexpected, saying that they wanted to do something that was contemporary to this moment, and that’s one of the many reasons why it didn’t resonate with me.
After Disney canceled the series, Kasdan denied it and came out saying that the series had not been canceled and that Volume II was in the planning stages. Explaining that reports of the show’s cancellation were exaggerated, he explained:
“Last week the decision was made to release our main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year. With all the TV and movies in production around the world, it seems unfair to limit an actor’s availability without a clear sense of when you’ll need it again. It’s further trivialized by the simple reality that the scripts we’ve worked on require just as many actors with whom there is no such contractual bond.
The showrunner also shared his hopes that Volume II will deliver a “fun, richer, darker, better” story. But I think it’s safe to say that Disney is done Willow.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… the Willow the franchise deserved better! It could have been great but the opportunity was wasted. Do you know how I know I’m right? Because Disney canceled the series and removed it from their streaming service.
