The ending of SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE was changed six weeks before the film’s release

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse it was an incredibly fun and emotional movie, and that cliffhanger ending definitely stirred emotions in fans! There is one aspect of the ending that was recently revealed in an interview with Empire Magazine where co-director Justin K. Thompson and producer Christopher Miller said that the ending was changed just six weeks before the release of movie.

The film’s initial ending did not feature Gwen Stacy assembling a team to find Miles Morales. When asked if they were concerned about that ending, Thompson said:

“I was really worried until about six weeks before we finished the movie, and then we added it. In the end the film fell apart which was really a shame. We did a screening and luckily we were able to strategize how to bring all these characters together and bring Spot back – because he’s not back – and show Rio and Jeff and tag all the characters.”

Miller continued to share his thoughts on the finale using the Star Wars movie The Empire strikes again as an example:

“We learned the same lesson we learned from Empire Strikes Back. That movie ended after he discovered the big twist and Han Solo was taken away. They didn’t have the scene where he gets the new hand and they’re staring at the star field. They did it as a retake, because they felt they needed some hope for the next film. We learned that lesson. We were like, ‘It’s a cliffhanger, it should end with a thing where you’re like, ‘Oh no!” So it ended with Miles meeting his alternate self and being trapped in an alternate dimension, oh no. But the audience really needed that moment of hope. Help is coming. They will find a solution. If we were smarter, we would have learned this sooner.”

It’s a good thing they added that ending with Gwen Stacy and the Spider-Verse team gathering! It totally left me with a sense of hope and excitement! It was a nice punch to the emotions at the end of the film.

Now, we just have to wait a little while before we see this story continue in Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse!
