A couple of years ago it was announced Danny McBride AND David Gordon Green they were developing an animated series for HBO based on the 80s classics The garbage can children trading cards. There has been no update on the project since it was announced, but according to Green, the project is still in the works.
McBride, Green and Josh Bycel (Solar opposites) will write the series, and it was inspired by their love for Garbage pail children and Saturday morning cartoons. It was said at the time that the animated series would be “family friendly and appeal to audiences of all ages.”
While the series was billed as “family friendly,” in Green’s recent update, he described it as “bad.” Here’s what he said in an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
“Right now, McBride and I are trying to make an animated series about the Garbage Pail Kids, if I ever get those cards. So we’re working on that and we have some really interesting ways to make a bad animated show, we’ll see if they’ll include us in that.
Green didn’t offer any further insight into the series, but I’m curious to see how it plays out. I hope it becomes a ridiculous and crazy show in the end!
When I was a child I collected Garbage Pail Kids cards. I loved collecting those cards and they brought a little joy and fun into my life when I was little.
The Garbage Pail Kids were a humorous parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, each card featuring a character with a comically grotesque appearance and a funny name, often full of puns. These characters were typically involved in bizarre or unpleasant situations. The cards quickly gained popularity among children for their irreverent humor and shock value, much to the distress of many parents and educators.
