Tom Cruise almost starred in Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM movie, complete with karaoke scene

It turns out that Tom Cruise he almost ended up acting Guillermo del Toro’S Pacific Rim. This information was confirmed by the director during a Q&A session at the 10th anniversary screening of Pacific Rim in IMAX 3D. The director said that Cruise would be cast in the role played by Idris Elbaand would have had a karaoke scene in the film.

Speaking to Collider Del Toro revealed:

“Oh yeah, the two models for Pacific Rim, the two models for the screenplay, are Hoosiers with Gene Hackman and Top Gun. So, the role played by Idris Elba, Tom Cruise would do it, and I also did karaoke [scene]. The deal could not be concluded. He wanted to do it. We were developing things and he couldn’t do it. I thought, ‘You know what? Let’s go with Idris Elba then. He is a god.’ Obviously, I had to rewrite it for that, but I thought it would be an interesting analogue to do so. It would have been a lot of fun.”

A Tom Cruise version of Pacific Rim it would have been interesting. Del Toro wanted to work with Cruise at some point while he was developing To the Mountain of Madness, he would have chosen Cruise for that too. The director said:

“I developed three films with Cruise, and none of the three times we worked, but we had a good laugh, you know? I like. My life is so strange. I’m like fucking Forrest Gump. Suddenly I’m in places where I don’t know how it happened, but I’m like, “Eh, I like it.” [Laughs] Honestly, I’m very grateful.”

I’m not sure what the third movie was, but maybe Cruise and del Toro will work together one day, but at this point it will probably take a while as they are both extremely busy working on other projects.
