CALVIN AND HOBBES Creator Bill Watterson’s Illustrated “Fable for Adults” THE MYSTERIES Coming Soon

The creator of the beloved comic Calvin and Hobbes, Bill Watterson, is back with a new interesting project. The project is titled The mysteries and is described as a “fairytale for grown-ups”. You worked on the book with a caricaturist John Kascht and the release is scheduled for October 10th! This is just a little reminder post for you. As a fan of Watterson’s work, this is something I was excited about.

Publisher Simon & Schuster describes the book as a “mysterious, beautifully illustrated fable about what lies beyond human understanding.”

The description reads: “In a fairy tale for adults by cartoonist Bill Watterson, a kingdom from long ago is beset by unexplained calamities. Hoping to end the torment, the king sends his knights to discover the source of the mysterious events. Years later , only one battered knight returns.

“Watterson and the caricaturist John Kascht worked together for several years in an unusually close collaboration. Both artists abandoned their past working methods, together inventing images that neither could anticipate.”

I’ve included some new preview images below that feature a double page spread with a short narration on one side and an illustration on the other. The publisher states that for these illustrations, Watterson and Kascht “worked together for several years in an unusually close collaboration” and “abandoned their past working methods” to create something new.

I love the creepy fantasy style of the art. Kascht’s caricature work is renowned and appears on billboards and magazine covers, but it is Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes work that most people know and this book is very different from that.
