Emma Stone says she’d like to make a silent feature film after starring in the silent short BLEAT

Emma Stone recently appeared at the New York Film Festival to talk about her most recent project, Bleata short silent film written and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is set on a small Greek island and follows a young woman (Stone) who “staggers through the devastation of losing her partner (Damien Bonnard) and an animal instinct for life. The 30-minute film explores themes such as loneliness and connection; death, love and desire, and human and animal interaction.

Variety reports that Stone says it was a “dream come true” to make a silent film. “If I never had to speak again, I would be thrilled,” she said, then joked, “and a lot of other people would be too…”

Later in the panel, he doubled down on his desire not to speak on screen. “I’m serious. It’s my favorite thing to not have to talk. I often wish we could cut out a lot of lines of dialogue because I think people can say a lot more without talking,” Stone said. “I mean, sure, sometimes they can say it with words,” she admitted. “I like the language…”

Lanthimos offered an idea. “Create a silent function!”

“Applause if you like the idea,” Stone directed the audience, who responded with enthusiastic applause. “I will… once the strike is over!”

I think it would be interesting to see what kind of story could be told in the old medium of silent film these days. I think it could be interesting and I would definitely be intrigued enough to try it. Would you be interested in seeing a silent feature film?
