There is something new Sonja Rossa film adaptation coming soon thanks to Millennium Media and the director MJ Bassett (Solomon Kane, Silent Hill: Apocalypse). I was thrilled with this film, which has as its protagonist Matilda Lutz (Vendetta) as the fearsome warrior. Word is now that the film will give us a darker take on the property than fans are expecting.
This latest update comes from producer Les Weldon, who explained in an interview with Collider that it will also be more grounded than other films in the fantasy genre:
“We’re almost done with the editing. That movie is very grounded and very real, if you will, but there are a couple of sequences that we have to get the CGI right so that you don’t look at them and think, ‘Oh, that creature doesn’t was right there.” So we’ve finished the movie and we’re ready to move on to the next part of the post on that topic. Red Sonja is also a little bit, I don’t want to say a darker version, but a little bit darker than yours that gives us you would expect, certainly compared to the original Red Sonja. We want to be very careful with the CG to make sure it’s done correctly and does the film a service rather than a disservice.”
It’s nice to know that they’re taking their time with the CGI aspects of the film so that the vision of what they’re trying to do works properly. That’s the only thing I was worried about about this movie, the production value looking cheesy, but it doesn’t look like that will be the case.
The film is also the protagonist Wallis Day (Sex/Life, Batwoman) like Annisia and Robert Shehan (The Umbrella Academy, Misfits) as Draygan. Other cast members include Michael Bisping (xXx: The Return of Xander Cage) in the role of Falco, Martyn Ford as General Karlak (F9: The Quick Saga, Final Score), Eliza Matengu (Thor: Love and Thunder) like Amarak, Manal El Feitury (Code red) like Ayala, and Katrina Durden (Doctor Strange, Shadow and Bone) as Saevus.
“The story of the beloved Sword She-Devil began in comics in 1973, and now, 50 years later, she remains the greatest female sword-and-sorcery hero of them all! She hacked and hacked her way into the hearts of fan of fantasy and comics.” all over the world. An incredible range of writers and artists have interpreted her stories in her native medium, comics, including the likes of Roy Thomas, Frank Thorne, Gail Simone, Mirka Andolfo, Mike Carey, Michael Avon Oeming, Jim Zub, Louise Simonson, Marco Russell, Alex Ross, Mel Rubiand countless others.
Hopefully we’ll have a trailer soon! There was a trailer that premiered at Comic-Con last summer, but I wasn’t able to get into the panel to see it.
