The classic story of Washington Irving The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is getting a new film adaptation from Pet Seminar: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beerand in a recent interview, he offers an update on the project and what he’s looking for.
Speaking to Collider, Beer explained: “Sleepy Hollow… There’s a lot of similar skill sets in terms of the beloved IP. It’s also the same kind of thing where when I was working on Bloodlines, I kept wondering when I was rewriting: ‘ What would I like to know as a Pet Sematary fan? What are the questions left unanswered in the book? And what are the parts of the book that weren’t explored in the films?'”
He continued: “For example, the end of [Pet Sematary] says that Jud is the guardian of the woods, and the book says that Jud’s experience with Timmy Baterman is the reason why evil targets him even when he is old, we know that… There are so many things about genre that they are not is not explored in the films, and many fans don’t know this because they haven’t read the book, or haven’t read it in so long.”
It will be interesting to see what elements of the story he focuses on and what he does to make it different from previous adaptations. I love this story and have seen several iterations of it over the years. My two favorites are the 1949 Disney animated classics The Legend of Sleepy Hollow AND Tim Burtonis the 1999 film in which he starred Johnny Depp. I watched that movie again just the other night, and it’s so good!
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is set in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, New York, in a secluded valley known as Sleepy Hollow. It tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a lanky, superstitious schoolteacher from Connecticut. Ichabod competes with the town’s strongman, Brom Bones, for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer.
The story is famous for its climax, in which Ichabod encounters what he believes to be the ghost of a headless Hessian soldier, who is said to be searching for his missing head. This apparition, the Headless Horseman, chases Ichabod through the woods, ultimately leading to the master’s mysterious disappearance. The tale ends with hints that the ghostly figure was actually Brom Bones who was playing a prank on Crane to scare him away from Sleepy Hollow and Katrina.
Anderson Beer added, “The legends of Sleepy Hollow are so rich, and when I started researching the Hudson Valley and real ghost stories, I became addicted to that, too.”
I hope this movie ends up being good!
