Some rumors are circulating on the Internet claiming that the two-time Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro was planning to revive arguably his most memorable and iconic character, Travis Bickle from the 1976 film Taxi driver for an upcoming announcement. The Uber company has hired De Niro for a commercial campaign in the UK and has confirmed that De Niro will be seen in the UK later in the year promoting the service, and has also made it known that the campaign has no Taxi driver theme.
“We are filming with Robert De Niro in London for a new Uber UK campaign, launching later in the year,” the company said in a statement. De Niro spokesman Stan Rosenfield said the actor is not reviving Bickle for the commercial, nor is he using the taxi driver character’s famous line: “Are you talking to me?”
Business plan reports required Taxi driver screenwriter Paolo Schrader to slam the idea in a Facebook post. “Ouch. Why Bob would do this is beyond me,” Schrader wrote on September 20 on Facebook. «But I didn’t see it. If I’m lucky, I never will.”
Luckily for Schrader, who wrote the screenplays for both Taxi driver and De Niro’s second Oscar-winning film, wild bullhe has nothing to worry about.
Robert De Niro will next be seen in Martin Scorsese-direct film The Assassins of the Flower Moonin theaters October 20.
