Shudder has released a red-band trailer for the HP Lovecraft-inspired body-swap erotic horror thriller Suitable meat. The film was directed by Joe Lynch and becomes the protagonist Heather Grahamand it actually seems like a pretty crazy but fun movie.
The film is based on Lovecraft’s short story, “The Thing on the Doorstep,” and the story follows psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby (Graham), “who becomes obsessed with helping a young patient suffering from an extreme disorder of personality. But his desire to help leads her into dark, occult danger as she tries to escape a horrible fate.
Lynch explained the film’s place within the Lovecraft tradition by saying, “Lovecraft was one of the original builders of the world. I loved him when [Quentin] Tarantino would have the Vega Brothers in the films or, of course, in the MCU, there are characters that cross over into each other’s stories, that come from the comics. But even before Stephen King made Castle Rock, Lovecraft was making it and there was something about the world-building that was so exciting. I remember watching From Beyond and someone was wearing a Miskatonic shirt and I was like, ‘Oh! You mean Doctor West and Katerine McMichaels are going to meet at some point?!'”
The film is also the protagonist Barbara Cramptonwho said, “It’s definitely in the world of Lovecraft and Miskatonic. Growing up in the industry, I realized that Lovecraft is my legacy and when this script fell into my lap, I didn’t know it was [writer Dennis Paoli] he would have given me. Yes, it’s in the world of Re-Animator and From Beyond and there are homages in Fit Flesh that reference the other films.”
