The director of The wonders, Nia Da Costa, recently sat down with Vanity Fair for an interview and talked about his overwhelming and stressful experience making the film. She revealed that it was such a crazy process that she often turned to other Marvel directors for help and guidance. She contacted directors like Chloe Zhao (Eternals), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) AND Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) before even accepting the job.
He joked about some of the questions he would ask, saying, “Are they going to kill me and destroy my soul? AND Kevin Feige a bad man? And they said, ‘No, he’s just a nice guy who was a nerd.’”
While he was in the midst of making it The wondersDaCosta revealed that he would send a message Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton on some of the most difficult shooting days. She told him, “I’m overwhelmed” and “I’m so stressed.” She went on to talk about how confusing things had become:
“Sometimes you’d be in a scene and say, ‘What the hell does all this shit mean?’ Or an actor is watching something crazy happen in space, and it is [actually] looking at a blue X. Obviously there were tough days and days where you thought, ‘It’s just not working.'”
Directing a film is no easy feat. It’s a lot of hard work, long hours, and trying to bring a certain vision to life. It must be even more difficult when making a big budget, visual effects-heavy film when working on a series of blue screens. I guess that’s when the imagination needs to kick into a new gear. However she managed to overcome it and completed the film. She also had a beautiful experience that inspired her to want to create her own world. She said:
“It was really cool to play in this world and take part in building this big world, but it made me want to build my own world more.”
The director was previously asked what she thought about superhero fatigue in the MCU and she said, “I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists.” She goes on to explain how she hopes her next film will stand out from other superhero films, saying:
“The biggest difference from the other MCU films to date is that it’s really wacky and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are different worlds than others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds you’ve never seen before.”
In The wonders, “Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shoulder the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her into an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become intertwined with those of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s niece, now a SABER astronaut , Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work together to save the universe as The Marvels.”
The film is the protagonist Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Seo-Jun Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar ShaikhAND Samuel L. Jackson. Nia Da Costa directs, and Kevin Feige he is the producer.
The wonders will be released on November 10th.
