Thirteen years after the beloved film based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the world of Scott Pilgrim returns with the Netflix series Scott Pilgrim takes off. With just two months left until the show debuts, O’Malley is the director of the series Ben David Grabinski have a fun story to tell fans of the franchise about how the stars of the film and show came together.
In a recent interview with EW, Grabinski explained that they took a gamble on the show, fully expecting the cast to return, but not being able to contact them at first.
“We started the show before we reached out to them. I can’t explain to you the process of me and Bryan sitting in rooms for about a year going, ‘Well, I hope they say yes!’ ” He continued: “I remember sitting in Bryan’s office when we started seeing emails from people saying they were interested… I literally screamed. That was the first point where we thought, okay, This could be a good show.”
O’Malley added of getting the cast back together:
“I was very nervous. I didn’t know we were going to get anyone, or especially everyone. We started asking, and Edgar asked, and I wrote a really nice letter, and everyone, very, very kindly and very promptly said yes. ”
He went on to tell the funny story:
“The cast has talked a lot about this email chain but there’s one detail that I don’t think anyone has mentioned. We would email each other when the movie came out and then this thread went dormant for about nine years. Then, before this anime was even on the docket, Michael Cera responded to a meme someone had sent as if no time had passed. He just said, “Oh, that’s funny.” Chris Evans was like, ‘Michael, what the fuck are you doing replying to this email from nine years ago?’ And then we all started chatting again. We were all quite young when we made the film. We all felt like family and I think we always will from then on.”
Scott Pilgrim takes offreturning cast includes Michele Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the role of Ramona Fiori, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson in the role of Invidia Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Square as Julie Powers, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Jason Schwartzmann as Gideon Graves, Johnny Simmons in the role of the “young” Neil Nordegraf, Marco Webber as Stephen Stills, Mae Whitman as Roxie Richter and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.
