Before Fight club it was a classic cult film starring Brad Pitt AND Edward Nortonthe story was a book written by Chuck Palahniuk. The author published his debut novel in 1996, and it followed the story of “an anonymous narrator [who] he finds escape from his empty life through an underground fight club where men find their true selves through shared pain.
The 1999 film brought a lot of attention to the author, and fans loved the adaptation, although Palahniuk had a doubt about how his story was changed to fit the screen, and he explained this in a recent interview with Variety, saying:
“I wasn’t a big fan of the ticking time bomb, that countdown to the end. AND [screenwriter] Jim Uhls put it in because obviously there is such a trope, and I’ve learned to accept that it’s a trope.
Meanwhile, CB reports that last year Chinese streamer Tencent Video replaced the ending of Fight club to show law enforcement triumphing over Tyler Durden’s plans, although they ultimately restored the film’s original ending. However, at the time, Palahniuk pointed out that the altered ending was actually a little closer to the original story’s ending than the 1999 film’s. The film’s original ending had the Narrator watch Tyler’s plan come to fruition as he buildings exploded across the city, while China’s altered ending cuts out before the explosions and offered a title card that read, “Through the clue provided by Tyler, the police quickly figured out the entire plan and arrested all the criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler was sent to an asylum to receive psychological treatment. He was released from the hospital in 2012,” which aligns more closely with the book.
Palahniuk said of the changed scene:
“The irony is that the way the Chinese changed it is that they aligned the ending almost exactly with the ending of the book, as opposed to Fincher’s ending, which was the more spectacular visual ending. So, in a certain sense, the Chinese brought the film back to the book a little.”
Interestingly, this brief edit was actually more satisfying to the author than the original film. I liked the 1999 film and the way it progressed. If you read the book, what do you think of the scene and the change made to the Chinese editing?
