YU-GI-OH! SPEED DUEL: STREETS OF BATTLE CITY Brings 8 decks of fun

A couple of weeks ago, Konami released a new product for Yu-Gi-Oh! Spin-off of the Speed Duel collectible card game. Speed Duel: Streets of Battle City brings Speed Duel duelists 8 new pre-made decks plus additional cards inspired by the second season of the popular Yu-Gi-Oh! souls. You’ll find decks inspired by Yami Yugi, Joey Wheeler, Mako Tsunami, Weevil Underwood, Espa Roba, Rare Hunter, Arkana, and Strings. This is the second Speed Duel box focused on Battle City and that brings me to a few complaints.

First, did we really need another Yami Yugi Dark Magician deck? I understand. Yami Yugi and Dark Magician are very important to the franchise. However, in both Battle City packs for Speed Duels, there is a Black Mage/Black Paladin deck. While some cards are different, the strategy is essentially the same. Especially when there’s another Black Magician deck in the box, it’s a little sad. It would have been really nice to have a full Odion deck or a new version of Mai’s deck. Joey’s deck has been slightly revamped Streets of Battle City focusing more on Warrior type monsters, which is why I don’t complain about him.

My other complaint is with the Rare Hunter deck. He is known in the anime for cheating and having an Exodia stall deck. None of these strategies are present here. I think there are a total of two cards he had in the anime present in this deck: Red-Eyes Black Dragon and Gear Golem, the Mobile Fortress. In my opinion it’s just embarrassing to have a deck that’s so false to the character. I know Mako has non-WATER monsters like Airorca and Flyfang, but they’re still Sea Serpent and Fish type monsters.

One final complaint I have is that cards are introduced that cannot be used. For example, Joey’s deck includes Karbonala Warrior and Giltia the D. Knight for the Extra Deck, but none of the materials for those Fusion Monsters are in Speed Duel. It’s the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon again.

That said, I know this box includes a lot of new Speed Duel cards like Summoned Skull, Arkana’s Dark Magician, and more. There’s also the first-ever printing of Mako Tsunami’s Fiend Kraken in the TCG! It’s not good, but it’s crazy that it took this long to get to the GCC. I also like that they brought back the original Dark Magician artwork, which is also my favorite.

I want to take a minute to talk about some of the new ability cards released in Streets of Battle City. I think Ultimate Wizardry has real potential. It can speed up the Skilled Black Mage and the Skilled White Mage, as well as allowing you to use Breaker the Magical Warrior multiple times. Whale of a Tale makes Fortress Whale less brick-like and gives it a decent effect. Stalking by the Rare Hunters is interesting, but I’m afraid it’s too slow since you have to place the monster on your field. I think Now You See Them… is a nice bit of gameplay as you can draw up to 5 cards, which is powerful, but that would make you play 3 Dark Wizards, which might be a little too complicated for a 20 card game. bridge. The Dragon Hunter Swordsman actually sounds pretty nasty as it can help you take out the Dark Paladin without the need for Polymerization and give it a huge ATK boost. I wish I liked Heart of a Warrior, but I feel like it’s not useful right now. I guess it’s a way to put a body on the field, but its use is extremely limited. Once Synchro and Xyz monsters enter the format, this will likely change. However, Joey’s Malign Motivation is pretty decent even though it requires your opponent to have a full field.

Overall, I think Streets of Battle City it’s really fantastic. Yes, I think Konami got some things wrong on some elements, but Speed Duel is still a lot of fun. I wish there were more Speed Duel events near me. You can check my opening of Streets of Battle City below and let me know which of the 8 ready-made decks is your favorite. Huge thanks to Konami for sending me a box.
