Warner Bros. TV Suspends Deals With JJ Abrams, Greg Berlanti, Bill Lawrence, Mindy Kaling & More

Warner Bros. TV has suspended overall deals with several of its A-list producers, which reportedly include JJ Abrams, Greg Berlanti, Bill Lawrence, John Wells, Chuck LorreAND Mindy Kaling. The suspensions are due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.

It makes sense that the studio would choose to do this since all the projects that were in production and development have been shut down, and it’s not like they can start developing any new ones right now. All major studios, networks and streaming services have paused talent deals.

It is explained that once talent is no longer able to provide services, the policy is generally to suspend agreements. “Such suspension of the agreement is different from general resolutions, which so far have not been widely seen in the industry, even though the writers’ strike has already passed the 90-day threshold when, historically, intermediaries have the ability to cancel agreements faced with an “act of force majeure” (the common interpretation in the entertainment world of how the phrase “force majeure” applies to these types of work stoppages).”

These general agreements “typically cover the overhead expenses of a writer’s business and fund project development. First-look deals also provide financial support and, in exchange, ensure that the studio or company has favored nation status when it comes to determining the potential distribution of a series or film.

Suspensions only put a deal on hold while no work is being done, and once production resumes, deals continue. Meanwhile, overheads to pay salaries at companies like Bad Robot will be suspended and will impact the staff of these companies.
