Writer and director Woody Allen says his film career may be nearing its end. His next film, Fluke, is a romantic thriller that marks his fiftieth, and possibly his last, feature film. The French-language film premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week, and Allen told Variety that, after controversies have limited his US funding, producing a new film means rushing to secure the support, and at 87 he’s not sure he still wants to do it. type of work.
“I have so many ideas for films that I would be tempted to make them if it was easy to finance them. But beyond that, I don’t know if I have the same desire to go out and spend a lot of time raising money.”
And while financing independent films has always been difficult, Allen was completely dropped from the market in the US after press coverage of allegations of sexual abuse by his daughter Dylan Farrow. He wasn’t exactly loved before the allegations, as he married his young stepdaughter after divorcing her mother. But he has been essentially blacklisted since the sexual abuse allegations surfaced.
He went on to defend his work on behalf of women in the film industry and patted himself on the back for casting women in lead roles and paying female crew members the same wages. She also denied all allegations against him involving his daughter. When asked if he felt he had been cancelled, Allen said:
I feel if you are going to be canceled this is the culture to be canceled from. I find it all so silly. I dont think about it. I don’t know what it’s like to be cancelled. I know that over the years everything has been the same for me. I make my own films. What has changed is the presentation of films. You know, I work and for me it’s the same routine. I write the screenplay, I raise the money, I make the film, I shoot it, I edit it, it’s out. The difference is not due to cancel culture. The difference is the way they present the movies. This is the big change.
Allen has made some great movies over the years, but I won’t mind seeing him go.
