Disney tried to develop another one Pirates of the Caribbean movies for years. During that time, Disney hired the creator of HBO Chernobyl AND The Last of Us, Craig Mazinto develop a story for the new Pirates movie with Ted Elliottwho co-wrote the first four films in the series.
During an interview with the LA Times, Mazin offered a brief update on the project and explained that when they originally pitched the idea, she didn’t think Disney would go along with it because it was “too weird.” He said:
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s just too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a great script and there was a strike and everyone was waiting.”
These Pirate movies are weird in general, so I can’t help but be curious as to how weird the next installment in the franchise will be. At the same time, I’ve gotten over these things a bit Pirates of the Caribbean movie and I’d be fine if we never saw another one.
At one point there were reports that Margot Robbie was to act in a Pirates movie, and the plan was to replace Jack Sparrow with a female pirate named Redd. That movie was written by Hornet AND Birds of prey writer Christina Hodsonbut it was eventually shelved.
Now, most of the reports about the franchise’s future are about getting it Johnny Depp again as Jack Sparrow. At least that’s what producer Jerry Bruckheimer insisted. Only time will tell if that will actually happen. Previously he had said:
“We’re all working on it. We’ll see how it turns out. But we’re very excited. I think we’ll have a great script. And we’re getting close.”
When asked if he still hopes for Depp to return, he said:
“We’ll see. I’d love to. I’d love it in the movie. That’s all I can tell you.”
The question is, do the public really want another one Pirates of the Caribbean movie? I know there are fans out there who would appreciate it, but what do you think? Mazin is a great storyteller, so the next film could be interesting if Disney really moves forward.
