Bill Maher he recently shared his thoughts on the Writers Guild strike and they’re sure to be controversial, and there’s no doubt his comments will anger Hollywood writers and lash out at him.
During a recent episode of the Club Random podcast with comedian Jim Gaffigan, Maher spoke about the strike saying, “They’re asking for a lot of things that are, like, outlandish.” He then went on to say that no one “has to live as a writer,” saying:
“What I find questionable about the philosophy of the strike [is] apparently, they’ve really transformed a lot since the 2007 strike, where they believed you deserved a living as a writer, and you don’t. This is the world of entertainment. This is the decisive league.”
Maher went on to say, “I’m not saying they don’t have points” and agreed that streaming platforms should report their viewing figures. But Maher also highlighted how the strikes are hurting so many other people in the industry with work all round stalled. He said:
“I feel sorry for my writers. I love my writers. I’m one of my writers. But there’s another important side to all of this, and beyond them, a lot of people get hurt — a lot of people who don’t make as much money as they do in this bipartisan world where you’re alone in one camp or another. else, there is no middle ground.
“You’re either for the strike like they’re screwing Che Guevara out there, you know, like, this is Cesar Chavez’s lettuce picking strike – or you’re with Trump. There is no difference: there are only two fields. And it’s much more complicated than that.”
Maher went on to say that this strike has come at the wrong time and that the writers don’t have much influence at this point. He explained:
“They are striking against streamers, who are looking for a get out of jail card for their overspending. They have tons of stuff in stock, so they have no reason to want to solve this strike. They struck at just the wrong time; they have no leverage.
The strike has been going strong for 127 days and there still doesn’t seem to be much movement on either side. It doesn’t look like these strikes will end anytime soon. They could go on until next year if the two sides are not willing to talk, negotiate and compromise.
What do you think of Maher’s comments on the strike?
