Medieval Torture-Inspired Traps In SAW X Made Director ‘Very Nervous’

The one thing we know we can always expect from Saw horror franchises are those gnarly traps of torture and death. We have seen some of these anticipated traps in the trailer for the next film in the series, I saw Xwhich leads Tobin Bell returns as John Kramer aka Jigsaw.

Some of the traps teased feature broken fingers, large nightmarish mechanical collars, a boy trying to remove brain tissue from his own brain, rats running down pipes towards a person’s eyes, and more. As you can imagine, it wasn’t easy for the director and the creative team to come up with crazy new ways to torture and kill people.

Director Kevin Greutert recently spoke to SFX magazine about the process of creating torture traps, saying:

“It’s really, really hard. Every year, when I’m told we’re going to do another take, I ask myself, ‘How do we do it?’ Because a lot of it starts with the script, but sometimes the traps and the cells are very abbreviated. In the script, sometimes they’re just what they look like, but usually there’s a lot of long meetings between different people: the writers, the set designer , the actors – where you sit down and hurry up.

The director went on to talk about how these traps were inspired by medieval torture machines, and they were so insane that it made him nervous:

“I have a lot of books about medieval torture machines and other dark things, and sometimes we just leaf through them and brainstorm with each other. Some traps have evolved a lot since they started out. And then you have to think about I was very nervous about some of the things we did, nervous about safety and nervous thinking it would look ridiculous.

“Much more than the other Saw films, we had to do a lot of testing. Especially in pre-production, but in the end we had to split the shoot into two parts – three weeks in November and three weeks in January – because it was so complicated. We had to make so many prosthetics and machines, and during the Christmas season we spent all the time figuring out these things.”

This film is set between the events of Saw I and II and follows the story of “a sick and desperate John who travels to Mexico to undergo a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to find that the whole operation is a complicated operation”. scam to defraud the most vulnerable. The notorious killer returns to his job, turning the tables on the crooks in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged and ingenious traps.

The film’s goal is to make a film that “captures everything Saw fans love about the franchise while also keeping them guessing with new traps and a new mystery to solve.”

The cast for I saw X also includes Renata Vaca (Midnight family), Paulette Hernandez (Crown of tears), Joshua Okamoto (Control-Z), Octavio Hinojosa (Come and play with me), Synnove Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Marca (The Sandman) AND Michele Beach (dahmer).

Lionsgate will release Saw X in theaters on September 29, 2023! Are you excited about the next chapter of Saw franchise?
