Director David Fincherthe next film project, The killer, which recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival. During a recent press conference at the event, he talked about his film and how he developed the main character, which he plays Michael Fassbender. That character is a calm, calculated killer, and he explains that he wants the movie to make the audience nervous the next time he goes shopping at Home Depot. He explained:
“Liking was the last thing on my mind with this character. He didn’t need to scare. You know, the banality of evil. My hope is that someone sees this movie and gets really nervous about the person behind him in line at Home Depot.
Fincher has a knack for making audiences uncomfortable with many of his film projects, especially those involving horrific crimes, so I have no doubt he accomplished what he set out to accomplish with this film.
It is explained that the Killer “does yoga, eats bunless McGriddles, and listens to the Smiths as he prepares to shoot his targets.” Speaking about the reasoning behind using the Smiths’ music, Fincher said:
“I knew I wanted to use ‘How Soon Is Now’ and I liked the idea of that song specifically as a tool to ease his anxieties. I liked it as a meditation tape, I thought it was fun and entertaining. And I don’t think there is an artist’s music archive that has so much sardonic nature and wit at the same time. We don’t have much access to who this guy is, and I thought through the mixtape of him it would be funny that that was our window into him.
Fincher also expressed his thoughts on the ongoing strikes by actors and writers, saying he’s sad about it, but that he “can understand both sides.”
“I don’t know what it says about the industry. I am very sad, of course I sit between both sides. This movie was made during the pandemic and I never want to make a headset movie again, but with that said, [we] I’ve just finished having to put down my brushes for three years and walk away – the idea of that continuing, especially now, is very sad for me. I can understand both sides and I think all we can do is encourage them to speak up.”
The story of the film is an adaptation of Alessio Nolentand the synopsis reads, “After a fateful near miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, in an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.”
The book description reads: “A solitary and cold man, methodical and free from scruples or regrets, the assassin waits in the shadows, awaiting his next target. Yet, the longer she waits, the more he thinks he’s losing his mind, if not his composure. A brutal, bloody and stylish noir tale of a professional assassin lost in a world without a moral compass, this is a case study of a lone man, armed to the teeth and slowly losing his mind.
The killer it has been in the works for almost three years and Fincher has collaborated again View screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker to write the screenplay. The film is also the protagonist Tilda Swinton, Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell and more.
This film will be released on Netflix later this year on November 10, 2023. The film recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival and received a 5 minute standing ovation that seemed to baffle Fincher.
