It was really cool to see almost all of the prime crew Star Trek: The Next Generation gathered for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 (sorry Wil Wheaton). It was just a pleasure for Star Trek fans, especially for those like me who have grown up TNG extension. However, Patrick Stewart he initially didn’t want to bring the crew back and needed to convince himself that it would be a good idea.
While a guest on The 7th Rule podcast, showrunner Terry Matalas shared that when he entered the show in season 2, his first instinct was to bring all the actors back TNG extension, and initially that didn’t sit well with Stewart for some reason. Matalas said:
“They said, ‘No, we never will.’ But along the way, I think Patrick warmed to the idea. The more his friends returned to the show, Jonathan [and] Marina’s back, de Lancie’s back, and Whoopi’s back… Those days on set were so hot and so happy for him, that he finally started saying, ‘We have to have everyone.'”
To me it’s quite absurd that the producers of the show were initially absolutely against the return of the crew of the Enterprise-D. It was one of the best decisions they’ve made in the series, and because of that Picard it ended on such a fantastically high note. It’s exactly what fans wanted and needed to see!
Stewart has been joined by the likes of Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, LeVar BurtonAND Brent Spiner. I hope Picard Season 3 isn’t the last time we see these characters together.
