Dave Filoni shares story of funny moment George Lucas cast Ahsoka as Anakin’s Padawan

Star Wars: Ahsoka writer, director and producer Dave Filoni he once shared the story of the moment George Lucas initially introduced Askoka Tano to the Star Wars: The Clone Wars creative team. The whole experience comes across as a fun “that’s so George Lucas” thing.

George Lucas he just liked great ideas and if he had an idea he liked, he would carry it along and work out all the other details later. It didn’t matter what came before, and when it came to Ahsoka, he insisted that Anakin Skywalker have a padawan, even if he didn’t.

It was never mentioned in the prequel trilogy or anywhere else that Anakin had a padawan. While a guest on Rebel Force Radio, Dave Filoni discussed the moment Lucas threw his “big hurdle in the road.” Philoni said:

“I remember saying to George, ‘Well, you know, Anakin doesn’t have a Padawan. Let’s put it here realistically, I mean, you know, he says, ‘Anakin Skywalker has a Padawan.’ And then Henry Gilroy and I look at each other like, ‘Okay. Um. But no. Anakin doesn’t have a Padawan.’ And he stopped and looked at us both, and then he said, ‘Anakin has a Padawan.'”

Filoni added:

“I suppose I could keep arguing this point back and forth and bringing the textbooks, but, you know, I preferred the choice of saying, ‘Well, okay, why does he want to do this and let me talk to him and let’s see where we can go. with this.'”

Eventually Filoni realized that this would be significant to the history of the Star Wars franchise. He went on to say, “I really like Ahsoka. You know, she’s become one of my favorite characters,” but admitted that it’s been “a struggle for Ahsoka and to get on screen” due to the negative reaction from some fans.

Now, Ahsoka is a fan-favorite character and has her own live-action series! Ahsoka is one of my favorites Star Wars characters and has one of the most comprehensive and extensive story arcs in the franchise. George Lucas knew exactly what he was doing.
