It seems that a RoboCop the film would have been a perfect project for the director Neill Blomkamp to hire, and in 2018 he was the one to take the helm The return of RoboCop. It would serve as a direct sequel to the original 1987 film directed by Paul Verhoeven.
That movie was based on a screenplay written by Ed Neumeier AND Michael Miner it was planned as a sequel to Verhoeven’s film shortly after its release. Neumeier and Miner were attached to produce the film, and Justin Rhodes, co-writer of Terminator: Dark Fate, would rewrite the script.
Beyond that, there was a possibility that Peter Weller would return to reprise his role. During a recent interview with JoBlo, Blomkamp revealed that his plan was to mimic Paul Verhoeven’s directing style. He said:
“It’s the only film I’ve ever made where I’d try to basically simulate Paul Verhoeven’s directing style. I wanted it to feel like it happened the next day. Like if Dick Jones fell out the window on Monday, this would’ve been Tuesday. It literally started the next morning. So it was a direct sequel, in exactly the same style.”
Neumeier had already said:
“I think Neill really wants to make a good RoboCop movie. His idea of him is that he should be the real Verhoeven… if Verhoeven directed a film right after RoboCop… I think that’s what he’s trying to achieve and I hope he succeeds. We’ll see what happens next.”
Sounds like this would have made a great sequel! This is a film that I would have loved to see made. Eventually Blomkamp left the project to work on another film project, Demonic. After seeing it, I think he should have stayed The return of RoboCop.
The RoboCop franchise is reportedly being picked up as a TV series by Amazon. We’ll just have to wait and see how it plays out.
