David Ayer on How SUICIDE SQUAD Broke It, Hollywood is ‘Like Watching Someone You Love Get Fucked By Someone You Hate’

David Ayer recently appeared on Jon Bernthal’s Real Ones and during the show he talked about his experience with Suicide squad. That whole experience left a bad taste in his mouth and it’s a taste he still hasn’t been able to wash away. Ayer constantly talks about his movie Suicide Squad because the movie that was released was not the real vision of him, the studio released a cut of the movie which they put together and it changed the whole tone of the movie from its original concept.

When Ayer was asked about his biggest heartbreak in Hollywood, he went on to explain that Suicide Squad broke him, saying:

“Hollywood – I tell people – is like watching someone you love get fucked by someone you hate. The highlight is “Suicide Squad”. That shit broke me. This kicked my ass.

You can tell he hated that experience. Every time he talks about it, every time he replies to a fan about it, he tries as best he can to explain that the studio screwed him. He went on to recount how everything fell apart for the film:

“You come straight to ‘Fury,’ right? I had the city in my hand: I could have done anything, and I did anything, and [I] embark on this journey with [‘Suicide Squad’]. And the same thing: authentic, truthful, we do all the rehearsals, we really get into each other’s souls. Let’s create this amazing, collaborative thing, right? And then “Deadpool” came out, right? And they never tested “Batman v. Superman,” so they expected a different result, and then got hammered by all the critics. Then he was like, ‘Okay, now we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark and soulful film into a goddamn comedy.’”

Speaking earlier about his original version of the film, the director said:

“All I know is that my never seen film works much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut on display feels real and organic. And Gunn told me it would be time to share it. He absolutely deserves to launch his own DC universe without further drama over old projects. I’m kind of chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger and I’m dealing with this situation as best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

Many fans still blame Ayer, but you’d think people would learn by now that Hollywood executives are the root cause of most of the crappy movies that get released. Ayer was definitely screwed with this one. I’d love to see his film, but I have no idea if that will ever happen.
