Disney continues to gut upcoming content that should have come to Disney+. First the Spiderwick Chroniclesand now Nautilusthe Captain Nemo series based on Jules Verne 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Also, like The Spiderwick Chronicles, the entire first season of the series has already been filmed.
The series was intended to put a new spin on the famous 19th century novel, “telling the origin story of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine, the Nautilus. An Indian prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that took everything from him, Nemo sets sail with his ragtag crew aboard the majestic ship, battling the enemies and discover magical underwater worlds.”
Shazad Latif (The search for love) was cast in the lead role of Captain Nemo. His character is described as an “enigmatic Indian prince who steals a fantastic submarine from the East India Company and sets sail in search of underwater adventures”. That submarine is the legendary Nautilus.
Michael Matthews directed the epic 10-part series and James Dormer executive produced and wrote the series.
According to Deadline, the decision to cancel the series “is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is claiming an impairment loss of approximately $1.5-1.8 billion. This followed Disney’s February announcement that it would cut $3 billion in non-sports content spending companywide.
I was looking forward to this series because I have always loved this story and fortunately there is still a chance that we will see it. Disney+ is said to be working with the production team to find a new home for Nautilus, with meetings and screenings underway.
