Bill Murray’s SCROOGED To Get 4K Remaster For Its 35th Anniversary With Never-Before-Seen Special Features

Richard Donnerthe classic 1988 Christmas movie, Scroogedhero Bill Murraycelebrates its 35th anniversary this year, and for that reason, we’re getting a 4K remaster of the film! The coolest part is that the new version will also include hours of never-before-seen footage and special features for the movie.

In the film, “Merry Christmas Eve antics put Frank Cross (Murray) into a ghostly time warp in this hilarious take-off of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’.” Cross, who has made a meteoric rise from the depths of the post office to president of a television network, is mean, nasty, indifferent, ruthless and has a sadistic sense of humor – perfect qualities for a modern-day Scrooge. Before the night is out, he’ll be visited by a New York cabbie from the past, a fairy from the present who loves silliness, and finally, a ghoulish, six-foot-tall headless messenger from the future.”

Special features for the upcoming 4K release include:

  • Director’s commentary Richard Donner

  • A Christmas to remember

  • Ebenezer update

  • Bringing ghosts back to life

  • Scrooged’s gaze

  • On set with Bill Murray

  • ShowWest performances with Bill Murray

The rest of the cast includes Karen Allen as Claire Phillips, Frank’s lost love; Alfredo Woodard as Grace Cooley, Frank’s personal assistant; John Glover as scheming network consultant Brice Cummings; Robert Mitchum as Frank’s boss, IBC Television president Preston Rhinelander; Bob Goldthwait as scorned ex-employee Eliot Loudermilk; AND John Forsythe, David Johansen, Carol KaneAND Robert Hammond as lively visitors to Frank.

Allen had previously spoken of the film on its 30th anniversary saying, “For me, Scrooged it is a film about love, about the redemptive power of love. I think it is the story also written by Charles Dickens. In that sense, these characters aren’t meant to be realistic, which is why it’s such a stylistically elevated film. So to play Claire and Frank, you have to find something that really solidifies your characters. That was key for me: Claire had loved Frank ever since she was a girl or a woman, and there was something that never went away even though he had become another person.”

We covered the film in an episode of ours Secret level podcast, which you can listen to here. Paramount Home Media Distribution will release it Scrooged for the first time on 4K UHD. “Yule” can own Scrooged 4K on November 7th.
