The REBEL MOON team was happy Zack Snyder’s project didn’t end up in a STAR WARS movie that said “F**k Star Wars”

rebel moon producers Deborah Snyder AND Eric Newmann they recently appeared at a film press conference to discuss the project, and one of the things they talked about was the project’s journey from one Star Wars offer your own franchise.

The whole idea was initially inspired by Akira Kurosawa’S Seven Samuraiand it is something that Zack Snyder he proposed to his professor when he was a film student at the Art Center College of Design in 1989. He wanted it to be a ‘Dirty dozen in the space? Or an ensemble film like Seven Samurai in the space?”

Snyder pitched the project to Disney shortly after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. The director wanted to create original characters and pushed hard for the film to have R-rated content. They passed and that ultimately led Snyder to repurpose the story and transform it rebel moon. Producer Deborah Snyder said:

“It used to be a ‘Star Wars’ movie and I never wanted it to be. I remember saying to Zack, “I feel like your hands are going to be so tied up with what that IP is,” even though he kind of lived off of it. So I was pretty happy when it all fell apart, because I always thought it was better. We’ve learned so much over the years working with superheroes and creating those worlds, and to make something now that’s entirely original… let’s say it’s science fantasy more than science fiction, and take all those skills that Zack honed, and doing something in this space, it felt really exciting.

Newman went on to talk about his enthusiasm for doing the project separately Star Wars, and was initially conceived as a series. It was kind of like, “Shit Star Wars“, he said:

“I remember [Zack] he called me at some point, and that must have been 15 years ago, saying, “I’m thinking about doing Seven Jedi, in the ‘Star Wars’ universe.” And I thought, “Oh, that’s a great idea.” […] Then, a few years later, he calls me and says, “You know, I think this might be a TV show.” I’m like, ‘Yeah, let’s do this! Fuck “Star Wars!” Let’s do it like a TV show.’”

rebel moon it ended up being a two-part movie that has the potential to turn into other movies and TV shows. In the story, a group of ragtag rebels rise up to fight against a gigantic evil empire. It is set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical regent Balisarius. They send a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them make a stand against the Tyrant.

Each part of the film will have an R-rated edition for fans to watch as well. The first will contain a full hour of extra footage. The movie stars Charlie Hunnam, Ed Skrein, Bae Doona, Djimon Hounsou. Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Stuart Martino, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Anthony Hopkins, AND Alfonso Herrera.

The first rebel moon movie, titled A child of firewill be streamed on Netflix starting December 22nd. The second part is titled The Scarifierand will arrive on April 19, 2024.
