Studio executives had no way of knowing what a cultural phenomenon the 1977 film was Star Wars and its sequels would become. The films have gone on to produce trilogies, spin-offs, shows, Disney parks, and billions in merchandise and memorabilia sales. But when the first movie was made, he wasn’t even sure if the first movie wasn’t a flop. So the decision makers at the studio had to decide the things they thought would make the film better, giving it the best chance.
One of the suggestions they made was for Chewbacca to hide a bit. franchise star, Marco Hammillwho played Luke Skywalker in the films, recently posted on Twitter:
“FUN FACT: Very early on during the filming of #SW Studio executives expressed deep concern that Chewie wasn’t wearing pants and suggested that he wear a pair of leather pants. The fact that they focused on this, amidst all the grotesque elements of the script, made us laugh (and a little worry) #True story“
This accompanied a post from actor and Star Wars fan Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who shares early drafts of concept art for Chewbacca, in which he wears a strange sweater under his iconic bandoleer.
You can check it all out below and collectively thank everyone tasked with saying no to the ridiculous request for Chewy shorts.
