JJ Abrams didn’t know what he was getting into with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 and was warned about Tom Cruise

When I was a director, I worked in the Paramount Pictures post office JJ Abrams came to direct Tom Cruise In Mission: Impossible 3. Those were fun times! We actually used to sneak in and have lunch with the cast and crew while they were filming on location! While we never ate with Cruise, we saw him often in the parking lot and had brief interactions with him. However, I will never forget that time we were eating and Phillip Seymore Hoffman came and sat down to have lunch with us! That guy was super nice and we all had a great conversation.

Anyway, Mission: Impossible 3 it was the first feature film directed by JJ Abrams, and as you can imagine, he was feeling the pressure of working on such a huge franchise with one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. But the film ended up reviving the franchise and launching a new path for Ethan Hunt’s arc.

During an interview in a behind-the-scenes video of the film, Abrams opened up about his experience directing the film saying, “Mission: Impossible 3 it was the first film I directed, and that was because Tom gave me the chance to shoot.”

Abrams then went on to talk about how he was warned about working with Cruise because not only was he the star, but he was the big producer. He added, “And I didn’t know what I was getting into, and people warned me, ‘Oh, the movie star is the producer, that could be a real problem.'”

Turns out, that wasn’t likely at all for Abrams! He explained that ‘It couldn’t have been less of a problem’ and added, ‘Tom was as aware of the film making process, what it needed, as anyone could have guessed. Every day I felt that he and I were in the trenches together in this incredible way we were both pulling ourselves up this mountain, and he wasn’t some movie star trying to pull off a vanity project. He was an incredibly focused and dedicated producer who also was the lead in the film.”

Cruise has recently honed his craft and developed incredible films with the creative teams he assembles. He seems like the type of actor and producer you would want to work with because his goal is to make great movies that entertain audiences and fans!

Mission: Impossible 3 ended up launching Abrams’ film career, and while he’s had trouble getting new projects off the ground recently, he’s made some fantastic movies over the years. I’d love to see Abrams come back and make another great original film someday!
