Zack Snyder initially pitched his REBEL MOON concept to film school

While we all know Zack Snyderit is in two parts rebel moon The movie started out as a Star Wars pitch he did at Lucasfilm, before that happened, he actually pitched the concept as early as he was in college as a film student at the Art Center College of Design in 1989.

The whole idea was really inspired by Akira Kurosawa’S Seven Samurai. This inspiration is easy to see in the plot of the film. Other inspirations included John Sturges’Western of the 1960s The Magnificent Seven as well as Jimmy T. Murakamisci-fi movie from 1980 Battle beyond the stars.

But that first proposal to his university professor accompanied him throughout his career. This is a project that he has always wanted to do and over the years he has brought this concept to other studios in both film and video game form. But it was only when he forged a strong relationship with Netflix that he was able to fulfill his dream of making this movie. During an interview with /Film, Snyder said:

“It all started, I think, in college. I had said something to my professor like, ‘How about ‘Dirty Dozen’ in space? Or an ensemble film like ‘Seven Samurai’ in space? Nice presentation. What about you say?’ Because it was one of those classes where you had to pitch a movie. And then I was like, ‘Oh, I would, that’s cool.’ Then we tried to sell it as a video game and as a movie at Warner Bros. a couple of times.”

In the story, a ragtag group of rebels rise up to fight against a gigantic and evil empire. It is set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical regent Balisarius. They send a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them make a stand against the Tyrant.

It’s a simple premise that we’ve seen in many films over the years, but this one is wrapped up in Snyder’s signature storytelling style. Snyder will not only make this story as a film, but as a video game as well. Speaking about this, and his previous unsuccessful proposal about it, he said:

“We pitched it to them and they were like, ‘Oh.’ Because I had this idea at the time that I was like, I really want to do this and I’d still like to do this sometime […] But really, I don’t think anyone has grasped the concept of “giant video game” and “movie” at the same time. Really centered. Where the game is as good as the movie and the movie is as good as the game. And they are cross-pollinated and there are Easter eggs in both. And I wanted to do it and they were like, ‘Nah, I don’t know.'”

Snyder was just trying to give both the movie and the game the time and attention they needed to be great. Deborah Snyder, Zack’s partner and wife, added: “Because a video game takes too much time to make. You’d say, “Well, let’s see if the movie is good.” Then you’d say, ‘Well…’ if it’s going to be a lousy game…”

Snyder confirmed that a game is in development and described the RPG as “huge” and “addictive”. It’s pretty crazy that after all these years, Snyder gets to bring his Rebel Moon concept to life, and it looks like this thing is going to be a big hit!
