One of the little quirks Ledger brought to the character was a little lip-licking twitch. The character was always licking his lips and this helped give the character a weirder and creepier feel. I dug it. But how did that tic to lick your lips come about?
Empire has published an oral history of The Dark Knight, and that’s where prosthetics supervisor Conor O’Sullivan talked about the way he drew what Joker’s face would look like with all the scars. Ledger called the makeup effects for the character “new technology” and explained that “the scars are made of silicone, not implants”. [was] impostor.”
In the documentary I Am Heath Ledger, we learn that sometimes the silicone pieces of his lip would come off and because of this, the actor started licking his lips to make sure they stayed in place.
Ledger just ended up leaning into that and incorporated the licking as part of his character’s creepy mannerisms.
