JURASSIC PARK fans point out a little-known joke in the film and now everyone hates John Hammond’s character

Jurassic Park is a fan-favorite film that still stands the test of time. Not many 90s movies hold up this well, especially when it comes to special effects. This movie is Terminator 2 they are 90s anomalies that keep fans coming back to watch again and again because they are so good! But that doesn’t mean Jurassic Park he’s not immune to scrutiny, or at least his characters aren’t.

A fan of the film, Reddit user Dlph_311, recently took to the platform to point out a joke that not many people talk about from the film. It happens in the scene where a construction worker reveals to the lawyer Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero) that park owner John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) notoriously hates inspections. “They slow everything down,” the foreman says lightly, shocking Gennaro, who has been sent to Isla Nublar to check the feasibility and safety of the attraction.

“I’ve seen this movie dozens of times and it’s the first time I realize that Hammond’s hatred of inspections is one of the main reasons the park failed,” admitted Dlph_311. “It’s a subtle omen that’s easy to miss.”

GamesRadar had tons of other replies from fans on this thread and they said:

“The dirty secret of the narrative that is often not recognized enough is that the park’s rapid failure was inevitable, because Hammond is nothing more than a cheap skating show,” said another fan. “Another underrated line is when Dennis Nedry says, ‘Don’t treat me cheap, Dodgson. It was Hammond’s mistake.’ This directly contradicts Hammond’s continued utterance of “No expense spared.” He mostly says it as a stage cover.

“The character is captivatingly portrayed by Richard Attenboroughso it’s easy to casually overlook, but John Hammond is a very flawed and irresponsible human being, and no one like him should ever lead a project like JP.”

Another wrote, “He’s a very evil character in the original book; the cheap, profit-driven billionaire who cuts corners and sees science as an avenue to further wealth and power.

“Man, Hammond is the worst. Always edgy, he expects his scientists to do everything dinosaur-related, but he still has to be there at every hatch,” said a third. “He hates inspections, because he knows he’s cheap and saving money. He spared no expense, asshole. I also don’t trust a guy who lets his grandkids get into these literal life-threatening situations, and basically does the bare minimum to convince them safety – namely, expecting Dr. Grant and Dr. Statler to come out and save their asses”.

Elsewhere, someone else highlighted an unspoken nod to Hammond’s love of shortcuts and need for immediate satisfaction: “He also puts champagne in a rocks glass when there are flutes of champagne right behind him. I always like that detail because it shows his lack of attention to detail.”

“If he had taken the time to do things right, things would have been much better,” another user replied.

“Things like this are why Jurassic Park is such a perfect script. Every joke has a purpose. No scene is wasted. Many scenes do multiple things at once,” praised another.

I mean, how can we get mad at the guy when the whole movie would have been boring if he’d followed all the rules? The recklessness of him is annoying and a lot of people have died, but we sure enjoyed watching it unfold, right?

Jurassic Park and its sequels are available to watch on Hulu, Prime, and Peacock.
