Spider-Man: There’s no way back home it was such a good and fun movie, and it was amazing to watch Willem DafoeThe Green Goblin version is back in action. He was so good and so damn sinister in that movie! It was an interesting choice to destroy the iconic villain mask early in the story, but there was a reason for it.
Conceptual artist Ryan Meinerding shared some information about the film’s set design in the book Spider-Man: No Way Home – The Art of the Movie. This is where the artist discussed how Dafoe’s Green Goblin costume from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was carried over for the film and explains that the destroyed mask was for Dafoe’s performance to shine. He said:
“As much as I like that helmet, Willem’s face is so expressive and he can transform from Norman to Goblin so fluidly and creepily. One of the best decisions made in the film was to make the Goblin his face more than anything else.
This makes perfect sense! Seeing Dafoe go from Norman Osborn to Green Goblin was incredible! He’s so damn talented and I loved the way he played this character in No Way Home, he was so nice but also pure sinister evil! Speaking of recreating the Green Goblin costume, Meinerding went on to say:
“It’s one of the funniest things about the way we try to approach costume design for these characters. We’re looking at what tools we have at our disposal, what colors we have on our palette and how we make them work together and put them into a narrative order that makes sense but also ends up in a place reminiscent of the character from the comics. And I think they did an amazing job to make it happen.
Spider-Man’s original Green Goblin costume from 2002 was a 580-piece suit Dafoe wore, and as you can imagine, it was uncomfortable for him. In No Way Home, the costume was a mix of the original costume with a purple hoodie resembling the comic book version of the character.
