The trailer for PRIMATE unleashes a blood-soaked battle for survival with a rabid pet chimpanzee

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Primatethe latest horror nightmare by Johannes Robertsthe director behind 47 meters below AND Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

This time, Roberts focuses on a rampaging chimpanzee in a brutally violent and chaotic survival story that feels absolutely wild.

Set in Hawaii, the story follows Lucy, played by Johnny Sequoyahwho comes home from college to spend time with his family and their pet chimpanzee, Ben.

What begins as a laid-back tropical hangout quickly turns into carnage when Ben contracts rabies at a pool party and becomes violently aggressive. Lucy and her friends are forced to barricade themselves in the pool, devising desperate ways to survive the terrible attack.

The synopsis reads: “When she returns home from college, Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah) reunites with her family and reconnects with their pet: a chimpanzee named Ben. During a party, the primate contracts rabies and becomes very aggressive.

“Lucy and her friends will have to barricade themselves in the pool, devising different strategies to survive. A tropical vacation that will end up turning into a terrifying primitive story of horror and survival.”

That’s pretty much it Stephen King’s Cujobut with an intelligent, rabid chimpanzee instead of a rabid dog.

It’s also in the cast Jessica Alexander, Troy Kosur as Lucy’s father, along with Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie MannAND Tienne Simon.

Primate it recently premiered at Fantastic Fest 2025 and made a bloody impression at the Sitges Film Festival, where it was praised for its relentless violence and old-school creature energy.

Roberts, with whom he co-wrote the screenplay Ernest Rieraseems to have created another compelling experience based on tension, chaos and pure panic.

If you like survival horror filled with shocking intensity and ferocious twists, this is a must watch when it hits theaters on January 9, 2026.
