James Gunn clarifies when his CREATURE COMMANDOS animated series will take place

Commandos creatures is certainly one of the most interesting projects that James Gunn AND Peter Safran announced for DC Studios, and is the first project to be released under their leadership.

THE Commandos creature team consists of monsters and superheroes and they were believed to be fighting the Nazis during WWII. The team consists of a human, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster and a gorgon.

Well, it turns out the story won’t be set during WWII. Gunn recently clarified on social media that Creature Commandos does indeed take place in the “current day.” I guess that makes sense since they will be working under the supervision of Amanda Waller.

I think the WWII era set would have been much more interesting, but Gunn believes this series is “Some of the best stuff I’ve ever written,” so we’ll see how that pans out!

It was previously explained that the project’s story is so big that the only way it could be told is through animation because it would be too expensive to make for live-action. But it was previously revealed that many of these characters will also be playing the roles in live-action later in the DCU, which is sure to be fun!

Voice cast includes David Port as Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn as Weasel and GI Robot, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma like the bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk such as Doctor Phosphorus, with Steve Agee reprising his role as John Economos from Peacemaker.

Gunn previously said of the series: “Commandos creature it builds on the great team at DC. What we’re doing with the DCU is the animation is directly connected to the live action. Television, movies, and games all intertwine in the same universe. We will be casting actors who will be able to play characters in this as well as other things, some of which we have already cast. I wrote all seven episodes of the show.

Commandos creature doesn’t have a release date yet, but Gunn has confirmed that the series will release before his film Superman: Legacywhich is currently scheduled for July 11, 2025.
