James Gunn highlights Conrad Veidt’s THE LAUGHING MAN and how he inspired the Joker

James Gunn recently turned on the spotlight Conrad Veidtcharacter from in the classic 1928 film The Laughing Man and how he was the main inspiration behind the creation of The Joker in DC Comics. He said in his post that he was accompanied by some photos saying:

“Conrad Veidt in The Man Who Laughs (1928) by Paul Leni, based on the novel by Victor Hugo. The film was a silent romantic melodrama: Veidt’s character was the hero; the smile was engraved on his boyish face from a Comprachico (a group of people who remodeled the physical appearance of children like a pruner would a bonsai tree).

It’s not actually saying anything that most DC fans don’t already know, but as you might expect, fans are talking and wondering what it means for the DC Cinematic IUniverse that Gunn is building.

The Joker has not yet been confirmed for any of his projects, including Batman: The brave and the boldbut I think it’s fair to say that one day the Joker will be introduced to the DCU, and when it is, Veidt could just be a major inspiration behind what Gunn envisioned for the iconic DC villain.

By the way, if you haven’t looked The Laughing Manyou should because it’s such a well done, tragic and haunting film.
