As you know, John Boyega in the end he wasn’t happy with how his character Finn was handled in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. A few years ago, when asked if he would be returning to the franchise, he said, “Lol, no thanks. I’ve moved on. Don’t play one role for too long. I have so much more to offer.”
Well, the actor was recently asked if he’d be open to returning to the franchise now and he told TechRadar, “It was a few years ago, so they were the subject of that particular project. But I’m open to any characters and scripts that are likeable and have a great cast and a fantastic director. So yes, I’m open to all opportunities.
This change of heart comes just months after it was rumored that he would reprise his role in Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker, and if he did return, it would be the movie that did it. That report has not been confirmed.
It was reported that the issues Boyega had with the Star Wars franchise were resolved after he met with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy to talk things over.
Boyega previously approached Disney about how his character Finn was being marketed as a core part of the franchise and then ended up being sidelined, saying:
“Everyone needs to leave my boyfriend alone, he didn’t even have to come back and try to save your shit. You get involved in projects and you’re not necessarily going to like everything. [But] what I would say to Disney is don’t bring out a black character, market him to be much more important in the franchise than he is, and then push him to the side. It’s not good. I will say it directly.
“Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver. You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know shit. So what do you want me to say?
“What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience.’ I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience. They gave all the nuances to Adam Driver, all the nuances to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows. Adam knows. Everyone knows. I’m not exposing anything.
In the end, Boyega has had some time to think things through and is open to exploring any opportunity that comes his way, even if it’s Star Wars. Would you like to see him return to the franchise?
