The GIANT ROBOT HELLBOY comic series announced by Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse Comics has revealed that they are collaborating with Hell boy Creator Mike Mignola for a new comic series called Giant Robot Hellboy! The whole concept originated from a fun pencil sketch Mignola made during the pandemic, and has now been turned into an entire comic book series, which looks great!

Mecha-Hellboy’s initial sketch had him battling Mega-Monsters. Mignola will re-team with his legendary collaborator, the artist Duncan Fegredofor GIant Robot Hellboy, and the series will run in three issues and begin publication in October.

In Giant Robot Hellboy, “Hellboy is kidnapped and wired into a massive mecha-Hellboy for a mission to a mysterious, distant island, but the island might just be fighting on its own.”

Mignola said in a statement, “Giant Robot Hellboy is my obvious nod to all those giant Japanese monster movies, which I’m actually not particularly fond of. What I love is hearing Geof Darrow and Art Adams talk about those movies, so really, I guess this series was inspired by those guys. What a giant robot Hellboy would look like, but I jotted down some sketches and liked them, and so it started to feel like something that could actually be done. But I knew I wasn’t the “The right artist, and I knew both Arthur and Geof were busy with other things, so the only other artist I thought of was Duncan. I had no idea how Duncan would respond. Too silly? History.”

Fegredo added, “Hellboy awakens to an out-of-body experience while simultaneously dealing with the usual fallout of mad scientists doing their own thing while relearning to walk. Come to think of it, that pretty much describes my return to collaborating with Mike Mignola…if you’ve enjoyed my previous forays into large-scale storytelling, oops, I’ve done it again!”

Mignola added, “It was exciting to work with Duncan again, ‘The man can draw anything that’s very cool for a writer.’ Duncan’s thing is that no matter what you ask him to draw, no matter how hard or complicated it is, he’ll make it MORE complicated (and, of course, harder). It all ends up being so much more than you asked for and Duncan will endlessly curse HIMSELF for going overboard and we’ll all sit down (eventually) and marvel at this amazing thing that he’s created.”

The first issue will contain a variant cover by Mignola and Stewart. Issue 2 will feature a variant cover by award-winning Shaolin Cowboy cartoonist Geof Darrow and Dave Stewart and issue 3 will feature a variant cover by Art Adams.

Giant Robot Hellboy’s debut issue goes on sale October 25, 2023.
