As people continue to panic about emerging AI technology and worry about how it will take over the world, Terminator director James Cameron he has talked about it and agrees on the need to regulate it. I guess if anyone has any interesting thoughts to share about artificial intelligence, it’s Cameron.
During a recent interview with CTV News, Cameron said he warned us, “I warned you guys in 1984 and you didn’t listen to me.” He went on to say that he believes that one day if we don’t regulate AI, we will find ourselves in a nuclear arms race. He said:
“I think we’re going to get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it, the other guys are definitely going to build it, and then it will escalate.”
While Cameron believes AI can take over the world and bring about its destruction, he doesn’t believe it has the ability to write good stories and screenplays. He said:
“Personally I don’t think that a disembodied mind is just regurgitating what other embodied minds have said – about the life they’ve had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality – and throw it all together in a salad of words and then regurgitate it… I don’t think it has anything that will move an audience.
“Let’s wait 20 years, and if an AI wins an Oscar for best screenplay, I think we have to take it seriously.”
You have to love James Cameron and how he sees the world. What do you think of his thoughts on AI? I just want to see what he does with that news Terminator movie he’s trying to make.
